Canada Ends SDS Program: What Indian Students Need to Know
In a major development, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced the immediate closure of the Student Direct Stream (SDS, effective November 8, 2024. As per the update, the decision was taken to ensure that all international students have equal access to the study permit application process. From now onwards, students will be able to apply under regular study permit application process.
“Canada's goal is to strengthen program integrity, address student vulnerability, and give all students equal and fair access to the application process, as well as a positive academic experience. To meet this commitment, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) …[has] ended as of 2:00 p.m. ET today.”, the official notification reads.
The SDS was introduced in 2018 to facilitate faster processing of study permits for students from select countries, including India. It allowed quicker approvals for applicants who met specific criteria, such as higher language proficiency scores and financial proof through a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC).
How to Apply Through the Regular Study Permit Stream
To effectively navigate the regular study permit application process, follow these steps:
Obtain an Acceptance Letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI): Secure admission by obtaining a valid acceptance letter. Pyramid eServices can assist you in selecting an institution and program that align with your academic goals.
Demonstrate Sufficient Financial Support: Provide proof of funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses, which may include:
- A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian financial institution
- Evidence of tuition fee payment for the first year.
- Bank statements or financial affidavits indicating available funds.
Meet Language Proficiency Requirements: Achieve required scores on an approved English language test such as IELTS or TOEFL. While the SDS required a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 across all bands, requirements may vary under the regular stream based on institution and program.
Complete a Medical Examination: Undergo a medical exam by an IRCC-approved panel physician ahead of time to avoid processing delays.
Prepare and Submit a Complete Application: Ensure all documents are accurate and complete, including your passport, photographs, and any additional forms specified by the IRCC.
It’s crucial to stay updated on any further changes to Canada’s immigration policies. Pyramid eServices continuously monitors updates from the IRCC to provide you with the latest information and guidance.
